We received an email asking if the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) had been reauthorized. The NFIP is not authorized perpetually and can only be “reupped” by Congress.
Whenever there is an impending government shutdown deadline, such as we almost experienced on March 15, 2025, the ability to issue new flood insurance policies gets cut off.
FEMA and regulators issued guidance in the past on what would happen if the NFIP became unauthorized. TCA wrote about this one of the prior times this almost occurred.
Well, not to fear. The latest continuing resolution postponed a potential government shutdown over the weekend and section 1709 includes the reauthorization. Section 1106 kicks the can down the road to September 30, 2025.
